Support

MASScot was originally founded in 2003 by Professor Rona MacKie CBE, as a support group for Melanoma patients and their carers. The main focus continues to be the provision of practical and psychological support for those affected by Melanoma or other skin cancers. The group is run by patients, ex-patients and carers.

How can we help?

We aim to give one to one support; we will listen and direct you to the most appropriate source of information to answer your questions.

We appreciate that not all the worries or confusion can be helped by clinicians. Often things like work, family or the ability to pay the mortgage are uppermost in our minds when we are given bad news. It can help to talk to someone in confidence, who has experienced melanoma first hand. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call or send us an email.

We offer access to psychological support and complementary therapy from trained and insured counsellors and therapists. In our Glasgow office, we have a therapy room where we can provide Counselling, Hypnotherapy, Reiki, Reflexology and other complementary therapies which skin cancer patients may request. We also provide support closer to home for those who live further afield. Fees for therapies are drawn from MASScot funds.

Our members have discovered that these therapies assist in relaxation and improve sleep, especially when worrying about diagnosis. Importantly, it greatly assists coping whilst awaiting results or investigations.

Our support and assistance is aimed at ensuring that patients are well prepared for their clinic visits as it is important to make the most of the time with the clinician. Having the confidence to ask questions and obtain answers they understand is important; we recommend bringing a list of prepared questions and attending appointments with a trusted family member.
